Author: Ozlem Oz
Average review score:

A Pioneer
It is a very rare experience to see books written for Turkey, especially concerning the industry of automotive. If you are in need of realistic and scientific data for major Turkish industries such as long/flat steel, automotive or glass, it would be a very reasonable idea to get this work, which is created with close cooperation with Michael Porter ( a figurehead in Business Administration ) and Turkish business society.

Competitive Intelligence
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (December, 2001)
Authors: Christopher West and Chris West
Average review score:

Nice primer
This was the first book I read that was dedicated strictly to CI. It turned out to be a good starting point since it covers much territory quickly, which is both a strength and a weakness. I liked the layout in that it is easy to read the chapter materials. My only issue with it was that it has a clear European focus and all of my work has to do with American companies and mostly American dominated industries. This isn't the authors fault but more my own as I should have read the preface more closely before purchasing it. Despite my error, I still think this was a good start to my now growing CI book collection.

Complaint Letters for Busy People
Published in Paperback by Career Press (July, 1999)
Authors: John Bear and Mariah P. Bear
Average review score:

Very Helpful Guide
This book gets right to the point! It clearly identifies the things every successful complaint letter should contain. I found the sample complaint letters very helpful and was thrilled with the list of addresses for agencies, federal & state, that take complaints against companies. Also, the list of addresses for most major companies was a wonderful resource. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for results!

Cracking the Global Market: How to Do Business Around the Corner and Around the World
Published in Textbook Binding by AMACOM (September, 1987)
Author: Jack Nadel
Average review score:

Excellent import-export primer.
This was one of many excellent books I read on international marketing prior to starting my own company. I met Jack through this book and found we had a few things in common...humor, determination, a love for the deal, love of family, and above all faith.

If your thinking of marketing your product globally read this book it is honest, informative, and filled with the fundamentals.

The Crypto Controversy: A Key Conflict in the Information Society (Law and Electronic Commerce, V. 6)
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Law International (January, 1999)
Author: Bert-Jaap Koops
Average review score:

Not 5 stars just because optimum doesn't exist in Universe
It's like Bert-Jaap Koops have been reading in the deep of my thoughts, catching them and mixing up to write his book.

Easy reading is the main pro of this work. Not technical at all, absolutely for all. I'm getting a degree in philosophy and I really appreciated the author's try to involve, (real a hard try!) Mr John Rawls to build a social and political framework around crypto policies. I'm not a Rawls' fan, but It makes sense if we consider the author's starting point, separating Rawls' theory and practical applications.

Finally the real crypto controversy: power to citizens or to governments? The solution: balance between the parties (similar to Rawls' balance between classes). Just one consideration (maybe I'm too critic): in John Rawls theory, balance is like a component of human nature (to be very simple), in the real world people will probably need to fight to get this.

However this book is a real good job.

Customer Relationship Management: Electronic Customer Care in the New Economy
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (15 January, 2001)
Author: Andreas Muther
Average review score:

Great Book to Understand the Topic CRM
This book introduces a great framework to structure the topic CRM. The so-called 'customer buying cycle' helps to understand what CRM is about. Some case studies used in the book are sort of outdated, but still, the book offered a good amount of value to me.

Data Warehousing and E-Commerce
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (21 June, 2001)
Author: William J. Lewis
Average review score:

Great blend of overview and detail...
Mr. Lewis has brought together old and new concepts in a way that is beneficial to the entire spectrum of IT professionals. Data Warehouse architects, modelers, and managers will appreciate the overview and detail of E-Commerce projects, especially with regard to how data is used and accessed with new technology. E-Commerce specialists will gain value from the areas related to database storage and metadata processes.
Most importantly, both business and IT managers will gain both an overall and detailed understanding of how Data Warehouse and E-Commerce projects work in concert. This book complements well my library of books by Imhoff, Inmon, and others.

Deploying and Managing Microsoft .NET Web Farms
Published in Paperback by SAMS (15 June, 2001)
Author: Barry Bloom
Average review score:

Very good, broad ranging, but ?????
This is a very good book. It covers all of the options/aspects available for web site infrastructure and it does it very well.

But after reading it I have a few negative impressions that I will air first:
- Some of the pages/paragraphs are tough going, in the effort to be complete I think the author has lost some clarity, but this can happen
- The title is a little confusing/disappointing, the use of .NET in the title is not very accurate, as only all/most of the material does apply to pre .NET Microsoft technologies (i.e. ASP, etc...). But in saying this all of the complete/broad topics are relevant to a .NET project, its just that Microsoft are going to be releasing .NET enterprise servers soon (sometime in Q3 2002) and .NET enterprise server have some very useful/unique features that are not covered in the book
- The book makes way too many references to .NET enterprise servers, in an effort to give the reader that the book is strongly .NET focused when the reality is that all of the topics also apply to Pre .NET technologies ( and sometimes not even microsoft technologies).

In favor of the book I will say it is a good read:
- It gives a good insight into what options exist and what architectures can be utilised. I would recommend the book for anyone that deals with large scale web sites ( including System Administrators, Technical Architects, engineers and developers)
- The book is written in a prose style but in certain sections it also can be used as a reference.

In conclusion, I think the book is very good, focusing very strongly on the current options (including Win 2K, MS SQL 2K etc...) but not looking to the future. It could do with an update (aka 2nd edition) as I think once the .NET enterprise server become GOLD, people will need to know more specifics about it and IIS 6.0; (and perhaps a little more about the actual .NET technology, cause if the book is aimed at administrators it won't be enough for them)

regards,
P.

Dictionary of Marketing
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (December, 1995)
Author: Wolfgang J. Koschnick
Average review score:

Flagship of Marketing Dictionaries
This is the most comprehensive, detailed, and complete marketing dictionary that I know of. Major entries include references and good graphics/diagrams where needed. I didn't give it five stars because it is expensive and aging (1995 and no second edition in sight).
